“Chica”, a 7 year old, spayed female Chihuahua came in for an examination because she did not want to eat her treats. She would not allow an oral exam due to her discomfort. A bad odor was noted from her mouth and a dental was recommended. During the dental procedure, dental x-rays were taken. Several teeth were found to be infected, but what surprised us the most was that she was missing the middle portion of her right mandible (lower jaw bone). After performing several surgical extractions, the remaining jaw bone was removed. Taking dental x-rays allowed us to evaluate the extent of her dental disease and formulate a surgical plan. We are happy to report that Chica is doing very well and is back to eating her treats.
